* These businesses use National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) and/or National Radon Safety Board (NRSB) radon proficient devices.  Call us if you have any questions about these radon measurement businesses at 800-543-8279.

Radon "Mitigation" Business List - (PDF file 159 KB).  All radon mitigation in Florida shall be performed by state certified professionals.

When to Mitigate

If your radon values are below 8 pCi/l (picoCuries per liter) you should consider re-testing.  The purpose of retesting is to confirm your radon levels and evaluate the need for mitigation.  Once you receive your new test results, you need to average the two test results.  If both tests were performed for the same number of days, you can simply average the two sets of results.  If the two tests were performed for different periods, we recommend that you time-weight average the results.

If the time-weighted average of the two results is over 4 pCi/l, this office and the US EPA recommend that you mitigate your home.  As a general rule, if your radon levels are between 4 pCi/l and 8 pCi/l, you should mitigate to protect occupants health, but you can take a little time to perform additional diagnostics if desired (mitigate within 6 months).  When radon levels are confirmed over 8 pCi/l, you should mitigate as soon as reasonably possible.  For levels much higher, on the order of 100 pCi/l, immediate action should be taken to reduce exposure.  Please read the radon measurement protocols (604 KB PDF).

Use of Proficient Devices is Required

Radon businesses are required to use proficient devices.  EPA ceased operation of its National Radon Proficiency Program (RPP) on September, 1998 due to limited resources.  EPA awarded a cooperative agreement to the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) for the Certification of Radon Service Providers, the Accreditation of Radon Chambers and Laboratories, and the Approval of Measurement Devices."   Another recognized organization who developed a private radon proficiency program was the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB).

Additional Federal Certification Requirements

Individuals conducting measurement or mitigation in Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) housing are required to have additional certifications either through the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB) or the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP). For the current radon proficiency status and proficiency program information on these businesses please contact NRPP (800-269-4174) or the NRSB (866-329-3474).
