Blue-Green Algae
 

For historical information on the location of blue-green algal blooms (cyanobacteria), visit the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Red Tide
 

Visit the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) for information on the status of red tide and to report incidents of fish kills.

The latest red tide status report is also available by phone at 866-300-9399 for in-state callers or at 727-502-4956 for out-of-state callers.

Health Notifications

Below is the state’s repository of Health Caution, Health Alert, and Lift Alert press releases that have been issued by county health departments (CHDs) in response to a harmful algal bloom in the affected waterbodies.

Blue-Green Algae

• A blue-green algae Health Caution is issued when DEP sampling results show that a bloom has been visually detected and/or when sampling results indicate the dominant algal species to be cyanobacteria.
• A blue-green algae Health Alert is issued when cyanotoxin is present.
• A blue-green algae Health Alert is lifted once toxins are not detected according to the analyses obtained from DEP-coordinated resampling of the bloom or if 30 days have elapsed since the last sampling date.

Red Tide

• A red tide Health Caution is issued when Karenia brevis cell counts are between 10,000 and 100,000 cells per liter.
• A red tide Health Alert is issued when Karenia brevis cell counts are greater than 100,000 cells per liter.
• A red tide Health Alert is lifted when Karenia brevis cell counts have dropped below the 100,000 cells per liter threshold.
