Mission: To eliminate tuberculosis (TB) in the state through administration of a statewide program that supports the Florida system of tuberculosis care.
The Florida System of Tuberculosis Care is a partnership between the Florida Department of Health (DOH) and the statewide public health system.
Working together, physicians, community-based clinics, laboratories, hospitals, social service agencies, academia, and public health professionals form a network that assures the five key components of an effective tuberculosis program (surveillance, diagnosis, treatment, case management, and education) are available statewide.
The Tuberculosis Control Section supports the partnership though leadership, policy development, surveillance, diagnostic and treatment services, expert consultation services, case management support, and provides education, training, and other technical assistance to local health departments and community healthcare providers statewide.
Department services are offered through the coordinated efforts of Florida's local county health departments (CHDs) and are prioritized based on the national program’s TB prevention and control strategies:
- Identification and completion of treatment for persons with active TB disease to render their condition noninfectious.
- Finding and screening persons who have had contact with TB patients to determine
- Whether they have active tuberculosis themselves;
- Whether they have been infected with M. tuberculosis; or
- Whether any young children or other immune compromised persons should be started on window period prophylaxis (preventative treatment) during the timeframe it could take for someone to test positive for TB infection after the exposure (window period).
- Screening, testing, and treatment of other selected persons and populations at high risk for latent TB infection (LTBI) and subsequent active TB disease to detect persons who can most benefit from treatment for LTBI.
About the Florida System of Tuberculosis Care
