Data and Research
Estimated number of people with active epilepsy in Florida by age group:
Prevalence
Based on the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS):
- Approximately 340,569 Florida adults (2.0%) have ever been told by a doctor that they have a seizure disorder or epilepsy.
- Among those, approximately 39.3% have had at least one seizure in the past year and 41.6% have seen a neurologist or epilepsy specialist in the past year.
- Approximately 93% of individuals with seizure disorder or epilepsy have some form of health insurance. This is significantly higher compared to individuals without epilepsy (85%).
Based on the 2019/2020 National Survey of Children’s Health:
- Approximately 0.9% of children in the US have ever been diagnosed with epilepsy and 0.6% currently have the condition.
- Using Florida’s 2020 population of children ages 0-17 (4,282,262) and applying the national estimates of epilepsy,
- 38,540 Florida children ages 0-17 have ever been diagnosed with epilepsy, and
- 25,694 Florida children ages 0-17 currently have epilepsy.
In 2020, there were 15,782 hospitalizations with epilepsy listed as the principal diagnosis and 96,545 hospitalizations with epilepsy listed as any diagnosis.
Managing Epilepsy Well
The Managing Epilepsy Well Network (MEW) was established in 2007 to advance the science on epilepsy self-management by conducting high-quality research across a network of universities, collaborating with community stakeholders to implement activities, and broadly disseminating research findings.
